90% of wealth is in non-cash assets, but most churches and ministries have not maximized this avenue for giving because of a lack of education, awareness, and ease. Join Vance Roush from Overflow as he dives into why focusing on non-cash donations can yield very generous gifts, how it’s a tax-efficient way for the donor to give, and help you prepare for all of the related reporting requirements. Organizations that actively promote the option of giving non-cash assets grow 55% faster than those that don’t. We will provide the education and tools connected to activating this giving channel!

Need some light for the financial path ahead? This practical, research-based presentation unveils two major research projects. We’ll look at the past, unpacking historic giving trends among ECFA’s members, including fresh insights about the impact of the pandemic. We’ll also look at the future based on a recent survey. Are you curious: What’s the anticipated cost of living adjustment (COLA) planned for ministries or churches like yours? What’s the impact of inflation on 2022’s giving, volunteering, and staffing? What’s the level of optimism about giving in 2023? How does it compare to how people felt at this same time one, two, and three years ago? This webinar will answer those questions and more as you navigate inflation, recession, and budgeting.

Description

If your nonprofit organization has experienced a significant decline in revenues or if it was subject to a government-mandated reduction in its activities, your organization may be eligible for a sizable federal cash benefit called the Employee Retention Credit. Since the Employee Retention Credit could provide substantial funds to eligible organizations, leaders of every nonprofit organization should have a basic awareness of the eligibility requirements. A basic awareness will allow a nonprofit’s leaders to determine whether to further evaluate their organization’s eligibility for the benefit. Because this benefit comes in the form of a “tax credit,” and because the eligibility rules have a number of details, the Employee Retention Credit can seem intimidating. Join us as Mike Batts and Kaylyn Varnum walk us through an explanatory guide to the Employee Retention Credit. Mike and Kaylyn will present the information in a non-technical manner.

Imagine what you could learn by examining more than $14 billion in “cash” donations to ECFA’s members. That’s just what happens in this exclusive, unique analysis of our members’ financial statements—primarily audits, which have been prepared by independent, certified public accountants. Which ministries had upturns and which had downturns? This webinar-on-demand explores the financial trends (1-year, 3-year, 5-year and 10-year) experienced by more than 2,000 of ECFA’s members, from individual churches to more than 30 categories of Christ-centered nonprofits like pregnancy resource centers or international missionary organizations.

Most ministry leaders are curious how giving received by their organization compares to ministries that are similar in size, emphasis, age or growth patterns. Our report will unveil those trends, and will also include a special section on the financial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Description

In June of this year, the U.S. Supreme Court issued two rulings with significant practical implications for ministry and church organizations.  In one ruling, the Court held that a federal law protects employees from discrimination based on their sexual orientation or gender identity.  In the other ruling, the Court held that this federal law doesn’t apply to employees whose job duties play a vital part in carrying out the religious mission of their employer (nor do other civil rights laws).

This webinar recording discusses steps ministry organizations can take to strengthen their legal rights based on these cases, including possible revisions to job descriptions and employment policies, specific points to include in performance evaluations, and board level policies.  In addition, this recording offers insights from cases protecting sexual orientation and gender identity that ministry organizations can use to communicate their beliefs and standards more effectively.

How have churches and Christ-centered nonprofits navigated the finances of the pandemic? Does it vary by type of ministry—from churches to pregnancy counseling centers? Does it vary by ministry size or ministry age or other factors?

What about the PPP (Payroll Protection Program)? What difference has it made, and how are people using the moneys they received?

This webinar recording will unveil practical answers to these and other questions. ECFA’s early-September survey explored the latest developments in giving patterns, which we’ll describe. We’ll also explain how ministry spending has been adjusted, from impact on staffing to impact on programs. We’ll also compare optimism levels toward anticipated giving in the next three months ahead—who is the most optimistic and why, and who is the most pessimistic and why?

This Webinar-On-Demand will focus on 7 Church Boardroom Bloopers, Time-Wasters, and Trouble-Makers Webinar Insights from the New Book: Lessons From the Church Boardroom with Dan Busby, ECFA President and John Pearson, Board Governance & Management Consultant.

This Webinar will focus on seven critical insights for exceptional church governance—based on the 40 short chapters in the new church board resource, Lessons From the Church Boardroom, by Dan Busby, president of ECFA, and John Pearson, board governance consultant. As Warren Bird, ECFA’s vice president of research and equipping, notes in the foreword to the book, “The bite-size chapters are certain to help anyone walk away with practical ideas that you can start using at your next board meeting. Some of the ideas hit me in the face, such as Lesson 38: ‘Invest 80 percent of your board work on future ministry opportunities.’ I was most helped by the idea in Lesson 14 of spending a few minutes training the board each time we meet.”

Learning Objectives

  1. Enhance boardroom harmony by clarifying the three board member hats.
  2. Understand and leverage the Governance Pendulum Principle.
  3. Avoid costly dysfunctional mayhem—so your healthy board members don’t exit the board.
  4. Leverage the 80/20 Rule in the boardroom.
  5. Inspire the board to address big rocks—not pebbles and sand.
  6. Focus on results (yes!), but more importantly—your pastor’s soul.
  7. Address Absentee Board Member Syndrome.
  8. Bonus Insight: Allocate “Ten Minutes for Governance” in every meeting and inspire your board members to be lifelong learners.

Creating a Safe Culture—Making Sure #MeToo Does Not Happen At Your Church or Nonprofit

The recent rise of the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements reveal the epidemic of sexual harassment and assault in the workplace, and as further evidenced in the even more shocking #ChurchToo hashtag, churches and nonprofits are far from immune. This webinar will cover the basics of what every church and nonprofit should have by way of rules and administrative procedures to prevent harassment and assault against employees, volunteers, and participants, and to properly address situations that may arise. Ministry-related organizations must not only be vigilant and responsive to minimize legal liability, but also to prevent a culture which opens the organization or its leaders up to the accusation that inappropriate actions were allowed or even encouraged.

  • In a social media environment where anything can be posted by anyone at any time, how can you protect your church and its leaders?

Erika E. Cole, Esq., known as The Church Attorney®, and her colleague Maame A. Amponsah, Esq., will discuss how social media impacts churches today. Statistics from Pew Research show that 7 in 10 Americans use social media to connect, engage with news content, share information, and for entertainment. If your church (or church leadership) is using social media in any way, including streaming of its services, you must be aware of the legal considerations unique to a church environment.

This webinar will address the legal issues associated with using social media including privacy, intellectual property, defamation, breach of confidentiality, and other legal matters. Attendees will learn best practices and guidelines for properly using social media to avoid legal ramifications that may affect the church, its members, and leaders.

Description

This Webinar-On-Demand will focus on the Best Practices for Child Protection in Churches and Ministries with Bob Flores and Scott Ward of Gammon & Grange, P.C.

Churches and other nonprofits face daunting challenges in faithfully stewarding the children and the ministries that God has entrusted to them. New technologies magnify these challenges even further. Ministering to a sexually broken culture requires churches to simultaneously combine pastoral care for sexual offenders with strong protection for the vulnerable. Past abuse allegations can surface decades after the events, making it difficult for ministries to investigate and respond correctly, prudently, and faithfully and to do justice to both those who may have been victimized and those whom the ministry exists to serve.

Drawing upon their decades of extensive experience in investigating and prosecuting child abuse and in advising ministries about preventing and responding to child abuse, in this webinar attorneys Bob Flores and Scott Ward of Gammon & Grange, P.C. will address challenges that churches and ministries are facing. Topics covered will include: (1) protecting against the child protection risks created by social media and other technologies; (2) wisely investigating and justly addressing allegations of historic abuse; (3) fully protecting children and other vulnerable persons while effectively ministering to sex offenders; and (4) obtaining insurance coverage that will be there when it is most needed.

Learning Objectives

By listening to this Webinar-On-Demand, you will learn about:

  1. Church Health. The two factors that most closely correlated to church health both relate to measuring impact.
  2. Effective Finance Operation. Effective internal controls, policies, budgeting, and reporting add up to an effective finance operation.
  3. Budget Planning Process. The larger the church, the earlier the annual budgeting process begins.
  4. Giving Outside the U.S. Of the $1.7 billion total revenue received by churches in this survey, just $100 million is given for ministries outside the United States.
  5. Revenue Forecasting. “Exemplar” churches forecast their revenue differently than other churches.
  6. Increased Giving/Increased Initiatives. When giving increases in “Exemplar” churches, salaries and new initiatives increase at rates at least three times higher than in other churches.
  7. Finance Dept. Staff Size. The average church in this survey, with revenues over $5 million, had 100 full-time equivalent employees (FTEs), including 4.3 FTEs in the finance department.
  8. Expected Spending Increases. Four differing church revenue situations reveal a fascinating picture of expected spending increases.
  9. Much Less Overhead Spending. “Exemplar” churches spend less of their money on themselves (staff and benefits)—and they spend much less on overhead, such as utilities, insurance and debt service.
